Maybe referring to broke as the 'new black' was meant to emphasize that the social codes to which we have grown accustomed have been thrown into question; that the financial crisis has revealed massive flaws in their integrity.

I didn't expect to engage with another comment--it just took me by surprise. I wanted to thank the blogger for her support. I finished university in 2008 and by last spring I felt worse than useless--I felt I was a burden on society. I know many of my peers felt the same--over-educated and under skilled. I watched many of them panic and try to force themselves into dying professions and endured a bit of criticism from my extended family for not doing the same. But, with the love and support of my parents, who share your philosophy exactly, I was able to explore myself. I realized that what I wanted was to figure out where I am needed. It wasn't easy, but with patience and faith, I have. I have found a true vocation teaching school in Costa Rica. It is challenging, and stressful, and sometimes I feel like I have bitten off more than I can chew, but I wake up every day knowing as deeply as one can know something that I'm doing the right thing. Because of this, I'm free--life can do with me what she pleases--because my peace and happiness come from an unshakable faith that I have something to give. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to find this. If it weren't for the financial crisis, and for support of people like you, I'm not sure if I would have. So thank you, thank you, thank you!!

;)teachernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386681055029440372.post-42494170047219626392009-11-11T10:12:40.648-05:002009-11-11T10:12:40.648-05:00Wow, what a pretentious windbag. I try, but it just doesn't happen. or at least I don't have enough to pay toward the particular individual that is needing my attention at that moment. I can feel the glazed look coming over my face and the sound of their voice fades away. They are still talking to me and I know I should be listening but I'm not. Then all of a sudden I realize there is a silence and the person is staring at me with that all too familiar look of disappointment. I've run out of 'funds' to pay attention with and there is little I can do about it. Now I must summon up the energy and will to piece together what they could have possibly been talking about. I try to recall the dreamlike remnants of their story. And although i feel bad about the break in the attention and the increase in tension between me and my friend, it is most times the best part of my day.ylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07855293433276338590noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386681055029440372.post-77123347301473920552008-11-28T14:11:00.000-05:002008-11-28T14:11:00.000-05:00Hi CoolDeep...thanks for the comment.. But I do believe that many of us (at least I can) become overwhelmed and by the shear magnitude of the needs in the world and my inadequacy causes such pain in my heart that I can try to distract myself with the busyness of life …my intent with this entry was to remind myself and others that can feel this way, that when we do, rather than look away and do nothing …we can make a difference by taking small actions.
SuziSuzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17661755617419413739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386681055029440372.post-91679816387820337652008-11-16T20:51:00.000-05:002008-11-16T20:51:00.000-05:00Suzi: I think the only reason the world works as w...Suzi: I think the only reason the world works as well as it already does is that people already take those small actions...and some take many more than a few small actions. The question you asked is how can we stand by when we witness cruelty and injustice? Probably because we could not go to work or take care of our families if we were to respond, even in a small way, to every injustice we become aware of. I think the question should be "Can we each do a little more? Can we each push a little farther than our comfort zone?" Wouldn't that make a difference? Of course, it would. So let's do it. Most pain is caused at home to ones own near & dear ones. Be soft in speech with neighbors, subordinates, colleagues etc. Remember any pain caused by harsh words will come back to you.

By sacrificing – A sacrifice can be by giving up some pleasure, giving up a habit, giving up a desire, giving up a asset small or big tangible or intangible etc. Every sacrifice lowers your assets but increases your living energy just as a balloon sheds weight so it can rise higher. When life itself is threatened why do you cling to material processions?

Abuse suffered – Every abuse thrown at you is transfer of karmic merit from the thrower accept it with gratitude for it comes at no cost.

Hatred Spread – Remember every day waves of pain are racing towards you from 4 corners of the world to surround and drown you and your family. Shield yourself by sending out the waves of love understanding and sympathy to others. There is no other way. Each and every day, that is the only way to roll. Honestly, do you know, 100% sure, that you'll be here to do that "thing" tomorrow? Or the next day? The only thing you know 100% sure is that you're here right now and that yesterday no longer matters...
