Where do we store our memories?

Why do we hold on to possessions whose use is no longer of value but are reminiscent of people or times in our past? Do we feel that the objects connect us to that past…does the solid form of the object allows us to imagine our memories as real and tangible as well? Or are they merely a catalyst to recalling that past event? Is it fear that if we part with these items then we may be parting with the memories as well?

For those of us that struggle with the decision of what to keep and what to save…we place values on our things, financial value, convenience value, aesthetic value and emotional value. But what exactly is the value of emotional value? Do we place that above other values? Should we???

Hi Suzi

When I was studying sociology I remember coming across the thought that an object is only as valuable as the power we give it.

We know this when we start to have sentimental attachment to something.

Every year I go through everything in my house and it goes through the 'used it in the last year, love or lose it' routine. I think that we can become attached to things that drive us back into the past. I used to practice Feng Shui and would consult for homes and businesses and am a big believer in losing the clutter. It keeps you moving forward!

Julieanne...we/I need to take a page out of your book. I am a packrat by nature but dislike clutter…quite a internal struggle.
Years ago I read a Course in Miracles and the one thing that stuck with me was that same philosophy ..that the only true value an object holds is what we give it...I try to be cognizant of that. Thanks for your thoughts!!
